Math Lab
This 90 minute Math class, is unique in that we take a dynamic approach to learning math. The content (math concepts being learned) is fixed, but the context is driven by student interests. We will be exploring the world around us with math and applying it to the interests of your children. Students will do math based projects, games, puzzles, and worksheets.

Spring Semester: Decimals, Fractions, Percents, Probability, Exponents
Math Lab meets 9:25 - 10:55 AM on Tuesdays, 5-8th grade
Fall semester is Sept 9 - Dec 16
Spring semester is Jan 6 - Apr 28

Engineering & Technology



1st quarter: Kinetic Art Projects - Students will combine engineering strategies and creativity to create art that has elements of movement in it.

2nd quarter: Build and Operate Robots - We will build and operate Elegoo Smart Car Robots have infrared remote control, line tracking, obstacle avoidance, auto follow, and first person view (FPV) mode.

3rd quarter: Block Coding - Students will use Block coding to control Sphero mini robots and complete in team challenges.
​
4th quarter: Engineer Build Challenges - Students will undertake the design and construction of one structural project and one mechanical project. The specific projects for this year are to be determined. Last year students' projects included (1) battling robots arms made from popsicle sticks, with hydraulics, and a 3D printed part; (2) stationary structures made from wooden sticks and tested on an earthquake table; (3) hydraulic lift made of wood.
Engineering and Technology meets 11:00- 12:00 PM on Tuesdays, 5 - 8th grade
1st quarter is Sept 9 - Oct 21
2nd quarter is Oct 28 - Dec 16
3rd quarter is Jan 6 - Feb 17
4th quarter is Feb 24 - Apr 28
Cost is $175 per quarter or $600 per year ($100 savings)
Science & Academic Skills
Using topics in Science for content, students will learn and practice the following Academic Skills:

Note taking - during lectures, while reading, and studying

Oral Presentation skills - preparation, and delivery

Independent Research - topic selection, use of proper resources, citations, and deciding the proper amount of content for a topic

Time Management - using graphic organizers, parsing tasks, establishing routine and discipline *This skill requires parent participation to be effective*
Fall Semester: Earth Science - Earth's structure, history, minerals, rock formation, paleontology, and weather. We will examine real fossils and rock formations.
Grades will be given and are based on the following rubric:Semester 1: 20% quizzes, 40% science homework, 20% in-class skills assignments and participation, 20% academic skills homework​

Semester 2: Selected Topics in Science - All science fields are open to examination this semester. We will read articles in magazines, journals, books, and online resources. In addition to teacher selected topics, students will select individual topics to research and teach in a ‘flipped classroom’ format.

Grades will be given and are based on the following rubric:
Semester 2: 20% quizzes, 30% science homework, 15% oral presentation, 15% in-class assignments and participation, 20% academic skills homework
